The warmer fall weather cooled to a chilled winter as the months passed by.

It’d been over three months since we moved and everything with Kane happened. I’d grown used to Platinum Rouge and its massive layout.

Kane and I had mutually accepted, some time ago, that he would train me in the proper use of the DeathReaper. He mentioned that there were ways to mimic other Dark Class indiviyms to hide mine, but more importantly, I needed to use it on a regular basis.

Dad kept to his word and started to act like a father should. He worried about how school was going and if I was taking care of myself. Recently, he had called out multiple times that he wished to help with my indiviym training. I’d yet to decide if I wanted him around, since I preferred to be able to speak with Kane about my usage of the DeathReaper.

Now, Eris and I sat near the back of Mr. Grein’s class, talking about random topics. Eris had since become a close friend of mine. She was strange and standoffish at first, but as we continued to talk, we’d become each other’s only friend.

“Miss Amelie,” a voice said, interrupting what I was saying to Eris. Mr. Purdum, my math teacher, stood at the door. “The headmaster wishes to see you in his office during lunch.”

After I passed a nod in his direction, he disappeared from the doorway. Shortly after, Mr. Grein entered, quieting everyone down.

Mr. Grein struck me as odd after the encounter on my first day. He was a kind man, but once I learned of his indiviym, I couldn’t help but not trust him. LuisterSpell allowed a person to listen in on someone’s thoughts without them knowing. It was a common indiviym that came from the Oplie Province to the northwest of Cyntro. Oplie housed disabled individuals, such as mutes—that was why many LuisterSpells flocked to the Oplie Province in search of jobs that interacted with those who had trouble with speech.

Mr. Grein appeared to be an exception.

As the final bell rang, signaling lunch, I gathered my belongings, moving to the office building to the south of my current location.

I knocked on the door, waiting to be let in by Headmaster Hollows. After a second, a voice came from the room.

“Amelie, I’m glad to see you.” The headmaster motioned for me to take a seat. To my surprise, Kane joined, taking the seat next to mine. “Something has been given to me by your mother and I wished to discuss it with you.”

At the mention of my mom, I frowned. With every week that went by, her demeanor toward me had grown from distant to outright harsh. It sent a wave of uncertainty down my spine knowing that she had given out information regarding me.

“It would that appear at age seven you took a biometric test—it’s the number that I would like to talk about.” He pulled out a pen, tapping it on a crumpled, yellowing sheet of paper.
